Translation extends beyond the mere process of adapting words to reach a new audience. It is a method of identifying and relaying meaning. Done properly, it establishes clear communication between two individuals or cultures, regardless of how vast the differences between them may be.

For 10 years, I have practiced and studied the art of translation. My eyes have been opened to the intricacies of this craft and its delicate nature in which the slightest, most subtle change in tone or terminology can either bridge a gap or create a daunting impasse between two people.

In my translation work I strive not only to offer a translation of the highest quality and accuracy, but to do so in a manner that represents the author’s intentions and style, taking into consideration every aspect of the source text, author and intended audience.

I work closely with clients from start to finish ensuring their complete satisfaction with the final product while providing this service in a timely and affordable manner.

About

My name is Kristen Stone and I have been assisting clients with their French to English translation projects for nearly a decade.

My qualifications include:

  • Master of the Arts in Literary Translation from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in May of 2015
  • B.A. from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon with a double major in French Studies and International Affairs in 2010
  • Proz Certified Pro (Profile)
  • Member of ATA and ALTA
  • Volunteer for Translators Without Borders
  • TEFL degree (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) from International TEFL TESOL Training (ITTT) in 2010, with which I have helped students from around the world master the English language.

I have worked with a wide variety of direct clients and agencies, always meeting the predetermined deadlines. My work covers a wide variety of projects, including medical studies for academic journals, a series of books published on autism, numerous projects for NGOs and International Organizations, published fictional short stories, marketing for various products, extensive touristic information and much more. I am highly professional and pride myself on producing quality translations on time at competitive rates.

In addition to my substantial education and professional experience, I lived in France and Morocco for three and a half years, spending time in numerous regions. This experience has given me a solid understanding of varying dialects and cultural differences throughout these countries. I have also spent the last decade traveling the world, gaining what I consider to be an informal education on global cultural diversity.

While I mainly specialize in literary translation, for which I received my Master’s Degree, I also have a strong background in biological and political science. Before redirecting my career path to pursue foreign language and translation, I intended to attend medical school following my undergraduate education. I worked in an immediate care clinic as well as a veterinary hospital and completed prerequisite courses for medical school at my university (anatomy, biology, environmental science, etc.). I am therefore highly proficient in scientific concepts and terminology. When I decided to change my career path, I focused the final years of my education on international relations and foreign language. During this time I diligently studied everything related to French, politics and international relations, including human rights, comparative political systems, economic development, US foreign policy, global resource dilemmas, international relation theories, French history and literature and much more.

During my Master’s program, I dedicated myself to perfecting my language skills and learning the art of translation in both theory and practice, focusing my attention on the technique and manner in which I express the content I am presented with. As so eloquently stated by Walter Benjamin,

“It is the task of the translator to release in his own language that pure language that is under the spell of another, to liberate the language imprisoned in a work in his recreation of that work.”
